Investigative Journalism Class with Nikole Hannah-Jones at SSU

Coming Fall 2024 is the Investigative Journalism Class with Nikole Hannah-Jones at SSU. This class is open for all Mass Communications majors and minors who are juniors and seniors. Since this is a lifetime opportunity, sophomores will be accepted on a case-by-case basis based on journalism writing knowledge. This course will also have a local professional journalist coach. This course is being sponsored by the Center of Journalism and Democracy at Howard University. Other participating universities include Morehouse College, Howard University, Texas Southern University, University of the District of Colombia, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, and North Carolina Central University.

SSU Student Newsroom Awarded over $22,000

Center for Journalism & Democracy Awards $22,000 to SSU Student Newsroom Savannah State University’s (SSU) Department of Journalism and Mass Communications received a $22,000 grant from the Center for Journalism & Democracy at Howard University via its Newsroom Innovation Challenge. SSU is one of only ten Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to receive funding from the center. The grant will support the Tiger’s Roar student-run newspaper and Tiger’s Roar-TV. Faculty & Staff: Dr. Serajul Bhuiyan  presented a paper titled "Charlotte Collaborative Journalism - A Case Analysis on Collaborative Journalism" at the AEJMC (association for education in Journalism and Mass Communication) Conference held from August 7-11, 2023. Dr. Juliana Trammel was invited to present her published chapter titled "Artificial Intelligence for Social Evil: Exploring how AI and Beauty Filters Perpetuates Colorism- Lessons Learned from Colorism Giant, Brazil, at the media sociology symposium in partnership with the Brazil-US Colloquium on Communication Studies (International Communication Association Pre-Conference, August 2023). Olivia Carter, Graduating Senior, becomes a News Producer at WJCL 22 News

Olivia Carter , senior at Savannah State University and president of The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) SSU Chapter, is now a news producer at WJCL 22. Carter is majoring in journalism and mass communications will graduate in May 2024. Last year, Olivia was an intern in the WJCL 22 News department where she learned the ins and outs of how a news operation functioned. She has extensive experience with news content creation, social media, and media relations.
