Dr. Charles J. Elmore, SSU’s professor emeritus of humanities, honored at The Savannah Tribune Hosts Biscuit Brunch and Sneaker Ball

The Savannah Tribune hosted a Biscuit Brunch and Sneaker Ball Soirée at the J. W. Marriott Plant Riverside Ballroom on June 28, 2025. Mr. Shawn “J. Chris” Christopher was the perfect emcee who engaged the crowd. Honorees Ms. Dawn Baker, Dr. Charles J. Elmore, Ms. Vaughnette Goode-Walker, Dr. Charles Hoskins, and Mr. Walter Moore were given unique pen sets to continue their writings about African American history. Dr. Elmore and Dr. Hoskins researched those archives incessantly, many times for their books, for their recapitulations of accurate information per Mrs. James. She also mentioned that Dr. Elmore, in his capacity as Department Chair of the Mass Communications Department at SSU, as well as the administrators at SCAD and The Savannah Morning News were a tremendous help when a fire at The Tribune in January 2006 could have preempted the paper that week, but the paper met its deadline. JMC Alumni, Chris Corinthian, Show 'My Money Mentors' Nominated for a Southeast Regional Emmy

"My Money Mentors" is a show dedicated to making financial literacy empowering for young adults. It was nominated for a Southeast Regional Emmy in 2025. The show is hosted by financial advisor Jacqueline Schadeck CFP® and financial literacy coach Chris Corinthian. Corithian is a graduate of the mass communications program. Host's Schadeck and Corinthian guide people through various financial challenges and equip them with actionable steps to make smart money choices and break generational cycles of scarcity and financial lacking. The show premiered on June 17, 2024, with two 30-minute back-to-back episodes on WABE-TV. Two more episodes aired on June 18. The show is produced by WABE Studios as well as with support from Delta Community Credit Union. Savannah State University’s Journalism and Mass Communications department’s student organizations, NABJ, MCSA, and Tiger’s Roar Newspaper, came together on Feb. 10, 2025, and Feb. 12, 2025, to host a two-day SRPI Prep Event, ensuring students are ready to shine at the Southeast Regional Press Institute. The event provided networking and professional development tips, along with free headshots to help students build strong resumes and online profiles.

JMC Student Shani Green Represents Savannah State at...

Shani Green (sixth from left), the president of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) at Savannah State University, recently represented the SSU chapter at a PRSSA event in Atlanta, Georgia. This experience allowed her to network with industry professionals and peers from various institutions, expanding her connections within the field. Shani also gained insight into the strategic communication practices used by Piedmont, a renowned healthcare organization in the Atlanta area. Her participation not only benefits her personal growth but also enhances the SSU chapter’s mission to prepare students for successful careers in public relations and communication.  

Fall 2024 Open Campus Day

The Journalism and Mass Communication Department at Savannah State University participated at the Fall 2024 Open Campus Day, where faculty and current students connected with prospective students eager to learn about the world of media. Attendees explored the department’s innovative programs, which include journalism, public relations, and digital communication, highlighting the hands-on experiences and opportunities available. With interactive discussions and live demonstrations, the department showcased its commitment to fostering a supportive and creative environment for future media professionals. The event was a fantastic opportunity to inspire the next generation of storytellers and media leaders.  

Kareem McMichael of SSU’s Journalism Department Recognized in Georgia Trend's 2024 '40 Under 40'

The annual publication recognizes 40 successful and civic-minded leaders among hundreds of nominations from across Georgia.  Kareem McMichael  was one of only two honored from Savannah, the other being  Syed Hussain , director of sales at Nexstar Media Group Inc. McMichael, 37, was nominated for his award-winning film career as well as his dedication to supporting several local causes through film. In addition to writing and producing films through his company, Karmac Productions, McMichael also supervises his alma mater’s student newspaper, the Tigers’ Roar, and acts in film and television. “We are so proud of Kareem [McMichael],” said Interim President Cynthia Alexander. “His exemplary work epitomizes the values we are trying to bestow on the next generation of SSU Tigers.
