Terry Manning receives Google developer scholarship

Terry Manning, technology coordinator for the Department of Journalism and Mass Communications, is a recent recipient of a Grow with Google Challenge Scholarship.

The scholarship is designed "to help people master the most important skills they need to be successful in the modern economy," according to a press release. The program focuses on teaching coding skills for mobile and web-based design.

"I'm really excited about this opportunity," Manning said. "Not just for myself, but for otherswho might be motivated to pursue similar careers in technology."

In the essay portion of his application for the scholarship, Manning wrote about students he interacts with at Savannah State:"Many of these students are first-in-family college students, as was I [they] need to see someone who looks like them, someone they trust, make a life change that can inspire them to do more."

The scholarship was awarded to 50,000 recipients and is the first part of a two-phase process. The top 5,000 students from the first phase will qualify for a second, 6- month scholarship to one of four advanced programs: front- end web developer, mobile web specialist, Android basics, and Android developer.

The scholarship program is co-sponsored by Google and Udacity, a for-profit educational organization offering massive open online courses. Content for the courses is designed in partnership with technology companies such as Google, AT&T and Facebook.
