Savannah State University Hosted 73rd annual Southern Regional Press Institute:  Two-Day Conference Features More Than 20 Communications Professionals

Savannah State University (SSU) hosted the 73rd annual Southern Regional Press Institute (SRPI) on

February 29 – March 1 to help high school and college students acquire skills in communications.  

 

The two-day event featured more than 20 industry professionals presenting topics related to multimedia and

digital communications, journalism, public relations, and strategic communications.

This year’s theme was “Artificial Intelligence in the Media and Pop Culture” with multiple topics in the

workshops concentrating on how AI has been impacting the world of journalism and communications.

The event’s two keynote speakers were Bud Johnson, professional content creator, freelance photographer

and writer and Paula Wambui-Pinzon, senior engineer at NetApp.

Founded in 1951, SRPI features keynote speakers, multiple concurrent workshops, and contests. Nationally

respected journalists and media professionals instruct the workshops. From 2013 to 2024, the institute has

hosted more than 250 professional guest speakers.

Established in 1890, Savannah State University is the oldest public Historically Black College and

University in Georgia and the first institution of higher learning in the city of Savannah. Students select

majors from 30 undergraduate and five graduate programs in four colleges — Business Administration,

Education, Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, and Sciences and Technology.
