Get ready Mass Communications Department for a fun-filled week of learning! Not only will students be  learning but they will be celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month!  During the week of  September  18 th – 22 nd , JMC has welcomed an amazing team of guest speakers who will come and give insight into the world of media.  Tuesday, September 18:  Lunch and Learn with Aisha Tyler in Whiting 110 at 11:30 a.m. At 2 p.m. Ms. Tyler will talk about Careers in TV and Career Readiness with guest Tracey Hayes and Pria Abraham. Thursday, September 21 :  Dr. Mathis will be in Whiting 110 at 11 a.m. to explain how diversity in TV, Media, and Film impacts you. To end diversity week,  there will be a Migrant Equity Southeast panel discussion. Can't wait to see everybody there!

Savannah State University prepares next generation of journalists through the JMC Media Experience

Savannah State University’s Department of Journalism and Mass Communications hosted the Frank Callen Boys and Girls Club on Thursday as a part of the JMC Media Experience Program in Whiting Hall at Savannah State University. SSU's JMC Media Experience purpose is to expose students to communications and media and to show students the career opportunities and paths available in media. Students had the opportunity to tour the JMC Mass Communications facilities on Thursday. Kareem McMichael chairs the JMC Media Experience program. The team includes Dr. Julianna Trammel, Francisco Duque, Terry Manning, William Martin, and Evelyn Williamson. Savannah State University's Department of Journalism and Mass Communication has a concentration program in journalism, public relations, and strategic communication, or multimedia and digital communication leading to a baccalaureate degree. Photography Exhibition Documents 100 Pastors' Rally in Brunswick

Photography Exhibition Documents 100 Pastors' Rally in Brunswick   The exhibition features 32 photos taken by Savannah State University students    and a faculty member   Savannah State University's Department of Journalism and Mass Communications will unveil a photography exhibition of 32 images taken during the Ahmaud Arbery state trial in Brunswick, Georgia.  The event will be held Saturday, April 2, 2022, at 1 p.m. in Whiting Hall on the Savannah State University campus.    The exhibition consists of photos shot outside the Glynn County Courthouse in Brunswick, Georgia, during the historic 100 Pastors' Rally supporting the Arbery Family on November 18, 2021.     Mass Communications students Kaleel Akins, Damien Bryant, Beyoncé Gordon, Alonzo Mckinney , and instructor Jason Miccolo Johnson shot the bulk of the 32 photos in the exhibition.   Johnson , an a ward- w inning p hotographer and SSU i nstructor , or ganized the trip to Brunswi...

William Martin recognized as an honoree at the Inaugural Savannah Film Alliance Honors Film and Television Professionals Gala

  The Savannah Film Alliance (SFA) honored eight outstanding local professionals from Savannah’s thriving film and television community at the inaugural SFA Honors Gala. The star-studded event had the theme of “Old Hollywood” and was open to the public. It was a night of “Lights! Camera! Action!”, and the entertainment community pulled out all the stops that evening, evoking classic Hollywood with lights, a red carpet, live music – even paparazzi. The honorees recognized include: Nora Clark, a production coordinator with credits on at least six film and television projects, now at work on a documentary about the life of Chicago tap dance legend Bril Barrett; John Grace, who has worked as director of photography and camera operator on theatrical features and commercials, including work for ABC, NBC, CBS, HBO, ESPN, PBS and Walt Disney Studios, among many others. CNN Partnership  with SSU JMC

Savannah State University has maintained a consistent partnership with CNN as its affiliate since 2018. CNN resources allow students to access CNN’s collection for archived footage, 100,000+ news items annually, and more. In the department of journalism and mass communications, CNN resources are being used in the classroom and in TV production activities to provide students with national/international industry - standard content. Students were able to download and use CNN content in their news stories, and they can also contribute.  

Tiger's Roar places in Georgia Press Association collegiate competition

On Feb. 16, members of the student media outlet Tiger's Roar will learn how they placed among other student outlets in the state in the annual Better Newspaper Contest, sponsored by the Georgia Collegiate Press Association  annually. At the end of January, Tiger's Roar was notified that it placed in two categories- Layout and Design and News Story-  Investigative.   This is the fourth consecutive year the news outlet has placed in the Better Newspaper Contest.   In 2015, Tiger's Roar won second placed for "Most Improved Newspaper." In the judges' notes, the design and layout were listed as primary factors for winning the award.   "Focus on improving the use [of] artwork and better graphic design has paid off.
